Is It Stress or Anxiety? Signs It's Time to Get Help

How to tell everyday stress from anxiety, and what helps when worry starts running the show

Everyone gets stressed. A big deadline, a tough week, a kid with finals. Stress usually rises with the pressure and fades when the pressure passes. Anxiety is different. It hangs around after the reason is gone, and little by little it starts deciding what you do and where you go. If that sounds familiar, the good news is that anxiety responds well to counseling, and you don't have to have it all figured out before you call.
Stress vs. anxiety
Stress is tied to something specific. The project ends, the test is over, and you feel like yourself again.
Anxiety keeps going. The worry runs on a loop, shows up in your body, and slowly makes your world smaller.
Signs it may be more than stress
- Worry that won't shut off and gets in the way of sleep, work, school or parenting
- Panic attacks: a racing heart, shortness of breath, tingling hands, or a feeling that something is very wrong
- Dreading social plans or meetings, then replaying conversations for hours afterward
- Physical symptoms with no clear cause, like a tight jaw, sore shoulders or stomach trouble
- Avoiding things you used to do: skipping the drive, the event or the class
- Feeling on edge on the I-88 commute or in the hours before a big presentation
One more thing worth knowing: anxiety tends to grow the longer avoidance goes unchallenged. That's why the first appointment matters more than the perfect appointment.
How anxiety counseling helps
It starts with listening. Before anyone suggests a plan, your therapist wants to understand your life: your history, your family, your work, and what a normal week really looks like. Two people with the same symptoms often need very different plans.
From there, your therapist may use approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps you notice anxious thought patterns and change how you respond to them. Over time, the work also means gently approaching the things you've been avoiding, at a pace you can handle.
You'll set small, realistic goals together. Not a list that makes you more anxious just reading it. Progress builds from there.
When it's not clear what's going on
Sometimes anxiety rides on top of something else, like ADHD or past trauma. When getting a clear picture would change the plan, Fox Valley Institute offers psychological testing right here in our Naperville office.
Teens and school anxiety
In Naperville, school anxiety follows the calendar: the back-to-school spike in August, finals in December and May, and testing season in the spring. We help teens with test anxiety, social worries and school avoidance, and we work with parents on how to support the plan at home. Counseling for children and teens takes place in person at our office.
In person or telehealth
Adults can meet with a therapist in our Naperville office or by telehealth from anywhere in Illinois. For many people, telehealth removes one more hurdle, especially when leaving the house is part of what feels hard.
Frequently asked questions
Is telehealth as effective as in-person for anxiety?
For most adults, yes. Adults anywhere in Illinois can choose telehealth or come to our Naperville office. Counseling for children and teens takes place in person.
Does Fox Valley Institute prescribe anxiety medication?
No. We don't have psychiatrists on staff, and our clinicians don't prescribe. Many people do well with counseling alone. If medication might help, your therapist can talk it through with you, and you'd pursue it with a psychiatrist or your physician.
Can my teenager be seen for anxiety?
Yes. We work with children and teens on school anxiety, test anxiety and social worries, in person at our Naperville office.
Do you take my insurance?
Our intake coordinators check your specific plan before anything is scheduled, so you know where you stand up front.
