Counseling that fits your college life

College is a lot. You don't have to go it alone.

Exams, deadlines, roommates, homesickness, figuring out what comes next. Every season has its tough games, and nobody gets through every one alone. Fox Valley Institute for Growth and Wellness offers counseling by secure video for college students anywhere in Illinois, with the same therapists and psychologists who see clients in our Naperville office. Text or call (630) 718-0717, and an intake coordinator will check your insurance and match you with the right therapist.

Meet from your dorm, your apartment or any private spot on campus. Start by video, come into our office over break, or mix the two. Either way, you keep the same therapist.

Counseling that fits between classes:

  • Sessions until 9 p.m. on weekdays, plus Saturday and Sunday hours.
  • No drive, no parking, no waiting room.
  • Start with a text, so there is no phone tag.
  • Keep the same therapist over breaks, anywhere in Illinois.
  • Meet from your dorm, apartment or any private spot.
  • Work through stress, focus, motivation, relationships and big decisions.

What others say about us

How We Help College Students

Most students who reach out aren't in crisis. They want a steadier semester and someone in their corner. Students anywhere in Illinois can meet with a Fox Valley Institute therapist by secure video.

What students bring to counseling

  • Stress and burnout around exams and deadlines
  • Anxiety, worry and trouble sleeping
  • Focus, motivation and procrastination
  • Homesickness, roommate and relationship stress
  • Big decisions about majors, careers and what comes next
  • Feeling low, stuck or not like yourself

Services for students

Testing for ADHD, learning differences and more is done in person, so many students schedule it over a break.

Telehealth or in person?

There is no wrong choice. Telehealth saves the drive and fits between classes, work and practice. Meeting in our Naperville office can feel more grounding for some people. Many clients use both, and your therapist can help you decide what works for you.

Turn stress into momentum

Counseling helps you work through the stress, stay focused and get back to where you’re headed. Talk with a therapist between classes or after work, right from your dorm or apartment. You can keep the same therapist at school and at home over breaks, as long as you are in Illinois for each session.

We work with students at colleges and universities all across Illinois, such as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, North Central College, Benedictine University, Wheaton College, Aurora University and the College of DuPage.

Going to school out of state? Sessions must happen while you are in Illinois, so you can meet with us over breaks and summers, by video or in our office.

Getting Ready for Your First Video Session

  • A private spot where you can talk freely, like a booked study room or a quiet corner
  • Headphones, for extra privacy
  • A charged phone, tablet or computer with a camera
  • A steady internet connection
  • Your insurance card (or a photo of your parent’s card), close at hand
  • A phone number where we can reach you if the video drops

Insurance and Telehealth

Most students can stay on a parent’s insurance plan until age 26, and many plans cover telehealth counseling. Illinois law requires state-regulated health plans to cover telehealth mental health visits the same way they cover in-person visits. We accept Medicare, including for Telehealth, and many major plans. We now take most HMO plans. For several of the carriers, please inquire to see if your HMO plan is offered. We don't accept Medicaid. Before your first visit, an intake coordinator checks your coverage and explains what to expect. See the insurance plans we accept.

Frequently Asked Questions for College Students

Can I use my parents’ insurance?

Yes. Most students can stay on a parent’s plan until age 26. Our intake coordinator checks your coverage before your first visit. We accept Medicare, many major plans and most HMO plans. We don’t accept Medicaid.

Will my parents find out I’m in counseling?

What you talk about in session stays confidential. If you use a parent’s insurance, the insurance company may mail statements to the policyholder, so ask our intake coordinator about your options before you start.

Do you have evening and weekend appointments?

Yes. Sessions are available until 9 p.m. on weekdays, plus Saturday and Sunday hours, so counseling fits around classes, work and practice.

What happens when I go home for break?

As long as you are in Illinois for each session, you keep meeting with the same therapist by video from home. If you go to school out of state, you can meet with us over breaks and summers while you are in Illinois.

Will I see the same therapist every time?

Yes. Unlike app-based services, you see the same therapist every session, whether you meet by video, in our Naperville office or both.

Do I need to be in Illinois during my session?

Yes. You need to be physically located in Illinois for each video session.

How do I get started?

Text or call (630) 718-0717, or request an appointment online. An intake coordinator will check your insurance, match you with a therapist and help you schedule your first visit.
